Decision on cultural event likely today

Muktsar, January 5
After holding six back-to-back Sadbhavna Rallies in the state, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) is now geared up to hold another mega rally on January 14 during Maghi Mela in Muktsar.
But after that, SAD has decided not to hold any other major political rally for the next three months — till Baisakhi Mela in Talwandi Sabo.
SAD chief-cum-Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal told this to party leaders in a meeting held recently at Badal village to discuss the arrangements for the Maghi Mela rally, said a senior SAD leader of Malwa region who was also present at the meeting.
Cultural event takes backseat
This year, the annual cultural event — holding of Maghi Mela by installing swings — has taken a backseat. The district administration has so far not even permitted any site for the installation of swings, hold circus and other cultural events. Usually, the permission is granted by January 1 for this purpose.
However, sources claimed that the decision in this regard was pending just because the SAD shifted its rally venue to Rupana village from Muktsar town and the party leaders were now “pressurising” the officers to hold the cultural fair close to its rally venue.
When asked, Jaskiran Singh, Deputy Commissioner, Muktsar, said, “The permission to hold the mela will be given tomorrow. We are trying to hold it inside the town, easily accessible to the public.”
Parties get ready
Sukhbir has also assigned them the task of bringing people in buses. For instance, the SAD leaders have been told to ferry people in 200 buses each from Lambi and Jalalabad Assembly segments, 150 buses each from Malout, Gidderbaha and Guruharsahai Assembly segments, 100 buses each from Abohar, Faridkot, Kotkapura, Maur, Bathinda, Talwandi Sabo and Zira Assembly segments, 50 buses from Fazilka Assembly segment. Besides the constituency incharges, key leaders have been told to bring people in minimum 10 vehicles.
Besides, the Youth Akali Dal (YAD) will bring in a large number of people by arranging hundreds of two wheelers and cars to take out a road show that will give a rousing welcome to Sukhbir.
On whether any Union Minister of the BJP was invited for the rally, Sukhbir said, “As of now, we have not invited any BJP leader from outside the state. Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal will be our main speaker.”
Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) state leadership has also started touring villages here to mobilise people for their Maghi Mela rally. AAP’s state convener Sucha Singh Chhotepur yesterday visited Sukhna Ablu village where the party organised a ‘Jan Chetna’ rally to appeal to the public to come to their rally.
The rally will be addressed by Delhi Chief Minister-cum-AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal. However, the party leadership here could not get a good response as more than half of the ‘pandal’ was vacant.
Meanwhile, senior Congress leader Jagmeet Singh Brar too has made an announcement to hold a series of public meetings in Muktsar district from January 7 to 9.
Security arrangements
In the wake of the Pathankot terrorist attack, the state police have been making tight security arrangements for the Maghi Mela and the political conferences that will be attended by a large number of VVIPs.

Badal (Muktsar), January 3
Deputy Chief Minister and SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal has decided to constitute party’s zonal, district and assembly segment-wise Information Technology (IT) cells to spread information about the party’s activities to masses through social media.
For this, Sukhbir yesterday held a meeting with SAD leaders of the Malwa region at his native village and directed them to complete the process in this regard at the earliest.
Gurmeet Mann, Chairman, Housefed Punjab, who also attended the meeting, on behalf of SAD’s Gidderbaha constituency in charge Hardeep Singh ‘Dimpy’ Dhillon, said, “Apart from constituting the zonal, district and assembly segment-wise IT cells, the Youth Akali Dal (YAD) leaders have been told to appoint district presidents in four categories – urban, rural, scheduled castes and backward castes.”
“Further, the YAD will be setting up youth clubs in all villages for the welfare of scheduled castes, backward castes and general category people. A minimum of two youth clubs would be set up in every village, but in larger villages, the number of clubs may be three also,” Mann added.
AAP is a lot of rejected leaders: Sukhbir
On the sidelines of the bhog ceremony of SAD’s Muktsar district president Dyal Singh Kolianwali’s brother at Kolianwali village on Saturday, Sukhbir termed the leaders joining the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) a rejected lot. “Leaders who are now joining AAP are just like unguided missiles. They all are projecting themselves as potential CM candidates, which will give rise to a new revolt in AAP in the future.”

CM should protest denial of drought aid: Manpreet

  • Chandigarh: People’s Party of Punjab chief Manpreet Badal on Friday called upon the ruling SAD to withdraw party representative Food Processing Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal from the NDA government at the Centre to lodge its protest against the denial of drought relief to the state. He slammed it as yet another “discrimination” by the Modi government against Punjab.

Muktsar, January 1

Putting all speculations to rest over Manpreet Badal-led People’s Party of Punjab (PPP) merging with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) during Maghi Mela on January 14, the PPP has sought permission from Muktsar district administration to hold its own rally.
Tejinder Singh ‘Jimmy’ Brar, a local Municipal Councillor (MC), who is general secretary of the PPP, submitted an application to the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) office seeking the permission.
“The PPP will hold a political conference on January 14 in Muktsar,” said Jaijeet Singh Johal, vice-president, PPP, who is brother-in-law of party chief Manpreet Badal.
Johal added, “There are rumours that the PPP is merging with some other party or we are joining some other party. These are all speculations and nothing else.”
He said they had sought permission for the same place where it had held their rally in the past — opposite the district Police Lines on the Bathinda road here.

More than two months have passed since the state government started disbursing compensation to affected cotton growers, but nearly 25 per cent of them are yet to get relief in Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal’s home district Muktsar.
The figures procured from the district administration revealed that a total of Rs 95.18 crore was allocated to Muktsar district, but Rs 23 crore is yet to be disbursed among cotton growers who suffered losses due to the whitefly attack.
The Malout subdivision, which had suffered immensely, is lagging behind the other two subdivisions – Muktsar and Gidderbaha. A sum of Rs 60.04 crore was allocated for the Malout subdivision, but Rs 16.2 crore is yet to be disbursed. Similarly, for Gidderbaha subdivision, Rs 17.88 crore was allocated, but Rs 3.77 crore is yet to be released. For the Muktsar subdivision, Rs 17.26 crore was allocated, but Rs 3 crore is yet to be disbursed.
A subdivisional magistrate (SDM) claimed that the disbursement was a tough task, thus taking time. “We are trying to ensure that not even a single affected farmer is left out from the compensation process. Besides, the lists of farmers are being displayed at common places in villages, so that nobody has any objection,” he added.
When contacted, Kuljeet Pal Singh Mahi, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Muktsar, said, “I have asked all SDMs to complete the disbursement work at the earliest. Besides, I am now personally monitoring the disbursement work.”

Muktsar, December 31
After finding out that both AAP and the Congress would hold their Maghi Mela conferences here on nearly 11 acres on January 14, SAD chief-cum-Deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal today changed the party’s rally venue, increasing its area significantly.
Earlier, the SAD was to hold the conference on three-acre SGPC ground on Malout road, where the preparations had also started.
During his visit to Muktsar, Sukhbir finalised a 60-acre area near Rupana village on Muktsar-Malout road, where the ‘pandal’ would be set up on 22 acres, said Kanwarjit Singh ‘Rozy Barkandi’, SAD’s Muktsar constituency in charge.
Sukhbir said, “We will have the largest crowd. It will exceed the total gathering at the rallies of AAP, the Congress and other parties. It will be the biggest political event so far. Further, we will sound the poll bugle there.”
He further challenged other political parties to arrange an event as grand as theirs. “Captain Amarinder Singh is tired after the Bathinda rally and the AAP bubble has burst,” he said.
At a meeting at Bhai Maha Singh Hall here, Sukhbir urged SAD activists to leave no stone unturned to make the event a huge success.
Sukhbir also paid obeisance at Gurdwara Darbar Sahib here and targeted Captain Amarinder in his speech. “Captain Amarinder recently swore on a gutka, but he hardly visits a gurdwara,” he said.
On AAP’s claim of bringing nearly 5 lakh people to their rally, Sukhbir said, “They can’t compete with us. They are making bogus claims. AAP leaders are confused as they don’t have a leader.”
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will address the AAP rally in Muktsar on January 14, forcing political parties to up the ante.
He further said before the Assembly elections, they would hold Sangat Darshans in all assembly segments to redress the grievances of the public.
While appealing the SAD cadre to bring a large number of women to the rally, Sukhbir said, “You all bring your wives to the rally. I will bring mine.” Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal has never attended the Maghi Mela rally.

Infighting came to the fore in the district leadership of Congress as IYC chief-cum-MLA Amarinder Singh ‘Raja Warring’ exchanged heated arguments with Gidderbaha ex-MLA Raghubir Pardhan in the party’s meeting held today to discuss the arrangements for Maghi Mela political conference.
Seeing Raghubir at the meeting annoyed Raja Warring, who publicly asked Raghubir to leave the venue. He also called Raghubir a sacked leader.
To control the situation, senior Congress leaders, including Kewal Singh Dhillon and Rana Gurmeet Singh Sodhi took Raja aside. However, Warring’s supporters kept protesting Raghubir’s presence.

Later, Raghubir said, “I had gone to the meeting after getting a telephone call of OSD to Capt Amarinder. I did not say anything against Warring in the meeting, but he insulted me. I am neither suspended nor ousted from the Congress. I will take up the matter with the PPCC chief.”

AAP plans it big for Maghi rally

AAP plans it big for Maghi rally

Muktsar, December 28

The AAP leadership has zeroed in on 11 acres along the Bathinda road for its Maghi Mela political rally. If their ‘pandal’ in set up on such a vast area, it would be three times bigger than that of the SAD-BJP alliance’s pet rally ground on the Malout road here.
AAP leaders, during a meeting here on Saturday, had even claimed that they would make efforts to bring about five lakh people for the rally to be addressed by party’s national convener-cum-Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
Not just the SAD-BJP alliance, even the Congress and the PPP have always held their rallies in an area measuring about three acres.
Though the new PPCC chief Capt Amarinder Singh yesterday assigned tasks to leaders for party’s Maghi Mela conference, after coming to know about the AAP’s rally area, Congress leaders are now confused over the selection of their rally area.
Gurmeet Singh Khudian, district Congress president, who is also coordinator for the rally, said, “The rally venue and total area would be finalised on Tuesday.”
On the other hand, preparations have already begun on SAD’s Maghi Mela rally venue on the Malout road, which belongs to the SGPC. But, a senior SAD leader said the rally venue was not yet decided because of the sudden demise of SAD’s district president Dyal Singh Kolianwali’s younger brother Karnail Singh.
Meanwhile, the PPP is unsure about holding the event this year.
